L-Shaped Shaker Kitchen | Halifax | More Kitchens
Published: 4 April 2026
Background & Brief
When our clients began exploring ideas for their kitchen renovation, they were clear on one thing they wanted to update their space without losing the character that made it feel like home.
After visiting Mirfield Garden Centre, they went ahead to book a free kitchen design appointment with More Kitchens, part of the Passmore Group. Senior Designer Julie visited the property to carry out a full survey, provide an initial cost and, importantly, understand how the kitchen was being used day to day.
The existing kitchen was compact, with a layout that limited both storage and natural flow. While it had plenty of charm, it lacked the practicality needed for modern living.
The brief was to create a light shaker kitchen that felt brighter, more open and far more functional without stripping away the cottage-style features that gave the space its personality. Retaining the existing oven was important to the homeowners, acting as a subtle nod to the home’s history, while new additions such as updated cabinetry and a new fridge would bring the space up to date.
Ultimately, the goal was to strike a careful balance between a kitchen that feels timeless yet practical, characterful yet refined.

Design & Layout
Senior Designer Julie carefully reconfigured the kitchen to introduce a more efficient L-shaped layout, improving the natural flow between cooking, preparation and cleaning zones. This simple but considered change made a noticeable difference, creating a space that feels easier to move around and more intuitive to use.
Storage was also significantly improved. By optimising wall space with well-planned overhead cabinetry and introducing more usable base units, the kitchen now offers smart, accessible storage solutions without feeling crowded.
A standout feature of the new design is the breakfast bar, which not only adds additional worktop space but also introduces a more social element to the room. It creates a natural place to sit, gather and connect something that was missing from the original layout.
Crucially, the existing structural beams were retained and embraced as part of the design. Rather than working around them, they now help define the space, adding depth, character, and a sense of authenticity.

Design Finishes
The finishes were chosen to enhance light, warmth and simplicity.
The light shaker-style doors bring a classic, timeless feel while helping to reflect natural light around the room, making the space feel more open and inviting. Paired with subtle, neutral worktops and soft splash back tones, the overall look is calm, cohesive and easy to live with. Underfoot, wood-effect vinyl flooring introduces warmth and texture, grounding the design and complementing the exposed beams above. It also offers a practical, durable solution ideal for a busy kitchen environment.
Retaining the original oven adds a layer of personality, creating a gentle contrast between old and new. This blend of heritage and contemporary finishes ensures the kitchen feels authentic rather than overdesigned. Every detail has been considered to ensure the space feels balanced, functional and effortlessly stylish.

Installation
With the design finalised, our team delivered a full kitchen installation, managing every stage from design to fit.
Project Manager Rob oversaw the entire process, ensuring timelines were met and communication remained clear throughout. His role was key in keeping everything running smoothly, giving the homeowners confidence at every step. Multi-skilled fitter John carried out the installation with precision and care. From cabinetry and worktops to appliance integration, his attention to detail ensured a high-quality finish across every element of the space.
The result is not just a kitchen that looks great but one that has been professionally installed to perform seamlessly for years to come.
The Result
This kitchen renovation is a great example of how thoughtful design can completely transform a space without losing what makes it special. What was once a compact, slightly restrictive kitchen is now a light, open and highly functional environment, tailored to modern living while still respecting the home’s original character.
By improving layout, enhancing storage and introducing carefully chosen finishes, the space now feels calmer, more usable and far more enjoyable to spend time in. It’s a kitchen designed not just to look good but to work beautifully, every day.
