Background

New to the Knaresborough area, Mr & Mrs Shaw initially visited our Harrogate kitchen showroom to discuss refurbishing their bathroom and cloakroom. Following a successful design consultation with Senior Bathroom Designer Garry, the couple shared that they were also considering updating their kitchen. An additional design appointment was quickly arranged with Senior Kitchen Designer Julie, who led the transformation of their dated and impractical kitchen space.

This case study focuses on the kitchen renovation project, though we were proud to complete all three rooms—bathroom, cloakroom, and kitchen—as part of a fully managed home improvement journey.

Objective

Upon moving into their new home, Mr & Mrs Shaw initially believed the kitchen would suffice. However, it quickly became apparent that the space was dated, and the layout was inefficient. Despite the generous floorplan, the sink, hob, and oven were confined to a tight corner, limiting functionality and ease of use.

The clients wanted a streamlined contemporary kitchen design with improved practicality and plenty of room for cooking. Initially, they assumed the new kitchen would closely replicate the original layout with only minor adjustments. Julie encouraged them to consider a more radical redesign to truly make the most of the available space.

Kitchen Design

Julie’s vision began with a bold suggestion: introducing a central kitchen island to maximise the room’s potential. Although Mrs Shaw was initially sceptical, Julie demonstrated how wider structural changes—particularly to the outer walls—could enable the addition of a large, functional island.

One key design change was enlarging the existing open access into the conservatory. Previously, the kitchen windows had simply been removed, but Julie proposed expanding the opening to foster a more fluid, open-plan kitchen environment.

To support this layout, the sink and dishwasher were relocated to a side wall, while the oven and fridge were raised to high-level housing along the opposite wall. This cleared the central space, allowing for a substantial island (3m x 900mm) to be installed. The island included generous deep drawer storage and featured a centrally placed hob, offering views into the garden and beyond—a perfect setting for cooking and entertaining. A dedicated seating area with space for three stools made the island a sociable family hub.

A light and inviting aesthetic was achieved with Metro Oyster cabinetry, sleek in-line handles, and Marfil Pommice slim laminate work surfaces, which added warmth and an earthy contrast. These were complemented by oak-effect LVT flooring, chosen for its practicality while the appliance suite was upgraded to CDA integrated appliances, offering both function and modern styling.

Kitchen Installation

Project Manager Rob oversaw the renovation with meticulous attention to detail, coordinating the timeline and sequence of works. Multi-Skilled Kitchen Fitter Robertas brought the design to life with precision craftsmanship, ensuring every element—from cabinetry to flooring—was expertly installed.

Project Outcome

The result is a sleek, spacious, and contemporary kitchen that now functions as the heart of the home. Thoughtful spatial planning and modern finishes have created a room that is not only beautiful but also tailored to the Shaws’ daily lifestyle. The central island has become a standout feature, offering storage, functionality, and a welcoming place for the family to gather.

The renovation of the bathroom and cloakroom, completed alongside the kitchen, further cemented the Shaws’ satisfaction with their home transformation.
