Contemporary Open Plan Kitchen Renovation | Harrogate | More Kitchens

Published: 9 March 2026

Background

After discovering More Kitchens through On Your Doorstep magazine, Our client visited our Harrogate showroom to explore how his kitchen, dining and utility spaces could be reimagined. Although the property already featured a handmade painted timber kitchen, the existing layout meant the three rooms operated as separate zones, making the overall flow feel fragmented and disconnected.

The brief for this kitchen renovation in Harrogate focused on creating a more cohesive layout that would naturally link these spaces together. Our client wanted a design that would improve movement through the home while introducing accessible storage, generous preparation areas and a light, modern aesthetic with warm finishes that complemented the character of the older property.

At the outset, the client did not have a fixed design direction. Instead, he was looking for guidance on how best to transform the space, trusting the design process to create a kitchen that balanced modern functionality with the traditional character of the home.

Kitchen Design

Having booked a free design appointment online, Senior Designer Julie first visited the property to discuss the project in more detail.

Following a detailed discussion Julie carefully considered the existing layout and presented a design proposal that unlocked the potential of creating the open-plan, cohesive space the client desired.

One of the most significant design changes involved opening the entrance into the utility room, which previously felt enclosed and disconnected from the kitchen. Because the property is an older cottage and the wall was originally external, this required structural alterations and a stepped transition into the space.

While this presented challenges, the change dramatically improved the flow between the zones, creating a far more open plan and connected layout.

A tall bank of cabinetry was introduced along one wall to house the integrated oven and microwave at eye level, alongside a generous larder with internal drawers and space for the client’s American fridge freezer. This not only improved accessibility but also created a strong architectural feature within the kitchen.

With the tall furniture repositioned, the layout allowed for a large L-shaped run of base units stretching from the kitchen into the dining space. This long run of cabinetry provided extensive storage while visually linking the two areas together.

Wide, deep drawers were incorporated throughout the design, making storage easier to access and ideal for cookware and kitchen essentials.

A Belfast sink was also introduced into the design a feature the client was keen to include. While traditionally associated with more traditional kitchens, the sink works beautifully within the contemporary scheme, subtly referencing the heritage of the property while sitting comfortably within the contemporary design.

Materials & Finishes

To create the light, welcoming feel our client envisioned, the kitchen design centres around sleek matt white cabinetry paired with warm copper accents. This combination introduces a contemporary look while adding subtle warmth that complements the character of the older property.

Florence Gold quartz worktops were chosen for their durability and elegant finish, with matching quartz upstands helping to maintain a clean, seamless appearance across the kitchen surfaces. A bespoke copper splashback creates a striking focal point while tying beautifully into the copper detailing throughout the space.

Integrated Neff appliances provide modern performance and reliability, supporting the kitchen’s practical, everyday functionality.

Underfoot, a light wood-effect LVT floor was laid on the diagonal, subtly guiding the eye through the room and reinforcing the sense of flow between the kitchen, dining and utility areas.

The result is a contemporary Harrogate kitchen that feels bright, practical and welcoming, designed to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Installation

The project involved a full strip-out of the existing kitchen, including removal of electrics, plumbing and flooring. The floor was then levelled before installing the new LVT flooring across all three areas.

Project ManagerRob worked closely alongside Julie to ensure the design translated smoothly from concept through to installation. His detailed planning and coordination ensured that every element from cabinetry positioning to structural considerations was carefully measured and prepared before installation began.

Multi-skilled kitchen fitter Andy led the installation with exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. Working alongside the wider team of trades including plasterers, electricians and flooring specialists the project progressed smoothly over five weeks, finishing on time and budget.

The result is a beautifully resolved kitchen renovation where thoughtful design and careful installation come together seamlessly.

Project Outcome

The completed kitchen has completely transformed how the home is used.

Where three separate rooms once existed, the space now flows naturally between kitchen, dining and utility areas. Storage is generous and accessible, preparation zones are clearly defined, and the overall design feels bright, balanced and welcoming.

The combination of matt white cabinetry, copper highlights and warm quartz surfaces creates a kitchen that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Most importantly, it provides a sanctuary for cooking, entertaining and everyday life a space designed to be enjoyed for many years to come.
