Open Plan Kitchen Renovation | Skipton | More Kitchens
Published: 17 November 2025
Background
This open-plan kitchen renovation in Skipton began when our client contacted More Kitchens after being referred by her sister, whose kitchen we designed and installed two years earlier. Having already seen the quality of our work, she approached us while comparing several companies in the Yorkshire region and explained that the existing layout of her home, divided into three separate rooms, no longer supported the way her family wanted to live. She hoped to replace the disjointed rooms with one large, open-plan space that would incorporate a sociable kitchen, a relaxed snug area, and a welcoming dining space, all designed and installed to a high standard befitting a modern Yorkshire home.
The client already had a trusted builder lined up to complete the structural elements. We worked closely alongside him throughout, coordinating the removal of the internal walls and the installation of all necessary steels. A central pillar remained as part of the new open-plan structure, and rather than conceal it, we developed a way to integrate it as part of the finished kitchen design. Once the building stage was underway, the client met with Senior Designer Julie to explore how the newly opened space could be transformed into a warm, classic, and highly functional kitchen that suited the home’s style and the client’s vision.
Objective
The goal of this project was to turn the property’s three separate rooms into one cohesive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. The client wanted a kitchen design that felt timeless, elegant, and expertly installed, with warm tones, classic shaker cabinetry, and subtle hints of pink and copper running through the scheme. She needed practical layout advice, as the enlarged footprint offered flexibility but required thoughtful planning to ensure each zone flowed naturally.
She was also keen to improve natural light levels, enhance access to the garden, and maintain space for her existing American-style fridge-freezer. As part of the wider renovation, we installed new windows, new French doors, and a bespoke sliding servery window positioned above the sink. This allowed the client to enjoy a practical indoor-to-outdoor connection, particularly during the summer months, reinforcing the sociable feel she wanted from her new Yorkshire kitchen.
Kitchen Design
Julie reimagined the now-open space to ensure each area felt purposeful while maintaining a strong overall flow. She began by designing a tall bank of Solent Shaker cabinets in Reed Green and Kashmir, a classic yet contemporary palette well suited to a Yorkshire property. Within this elevation, she incorporated a chef’s pantry complete with interior drawers, adjustable shelving, and a concealed work surface for the microwave. The clients’ American-style fridge-freezer was framed within matching cabinetry to create a seamless, built-in appearance, and two Neff Slide & Hide ovens were positioned at eye level for improved usability and a premium finish.

Along the main run of units, Julie created a generous work surface arrangement featuring a double butler sink, an integrated dishwasher, and a striking Quooker black hot tap. Luxurious Florence Quartz worktops were selected for their durability and classic appeal, with moulded drainage grooves and a matching upstand to complete the look. The sink run ended at the newly installed sliding servery window, positioned strategically to allow the client to open the window to an outdoor bar ledge, making the space ideal for entertaining.

To establish a central hub for everyday living and social cooking, Julie introduced a long, slim island featuring deep drawer storage and slimmer shelving on the reverse. The induction hob was placed at its centre, allowing the client to cook while facing the room and remain fully engaged with family or guests. The structural pillar that remained after the wall removal was finished in a soft fog brick-style tile, enabling it to blend gently into the overall design while adding texture and architectural interest.

Extending from the island, a lowered solid Iroko timber dining table provided ample seating for six. The rich timber introduced natural warmth, which contrasted beautifully with the quartz surfaces and painted cabinetry. The clients’ chosen pendant lights were installed above the dining table to personalise the space and create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

In the snug area, the chimney breast became a natural focal point. To enhance it, we installed wall-hung cabinetry to either side, finished in the same shaker style as the kitchen. Chunky Iroko shelves were fitted above each unit, complete with integrated lighting, which added both ambience and continuity with the dining table. This section of the space offered a relaxed, comfortable area that still felt connected to the main kitchen design.

The final area of the open-plan layout was transformed into a dedicated bar space. This included a second drinks fridge, a wine cooler, and bronze-tinted glass shelving fitted against a bronze mirrored back panel. Warm white LED lighting illuminated the bar, creating a striking yet elegant feature that added sophistication to the room and complemented the classic shaker kitchen design.

The overall specification featured Solent Shaker cabinetry in Reed Green and Kashmir, copper cup handles and knobs, Florence Quartz worktops, bronze-tint glass and mirrors, a Quooker black hot tap, Iroko timber surfaces, and Roasted Oak LVT flooring. Together, these materials created a timeless, high-quality finish that reflects the style of many of our kitchen design and installation projects across Yorkshire.
Additional Works
Alongside the main kitchen installation in Skipton, our team completed all associated electrical work, new plumbing including upgraded radiators, new skirting boards, and the installation of the new windows, French doors, and bespoke sliding servery window. The entire project was fully managed by Project Manager Rob, who coordinated each stage of the process to ensure a smooth, efficient, and stress-free refurbishment. Multi-Skilled Fitter Jason carried out the installation with exceptional precision, delivering the high-quality finish that More Kitchens is known for throughout Yorkshire.

Project Outcome
The completed project is a beautifully cohesive open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that has transformed the way the clients use their home. The once-segmented rooms now operate as a single flowing space, ideal for cooking, hosting, and everyday family life. The classic shaker design, combined with warm tones and carefully selected materials, has created a refined yet inviting atmosphere that feels perfectly suited to a Yorkshire property of this style. The clients were thrilled with both the process and the exceptional quality of the final installation.
