Large L-Shaped Classic Kitchen & Cloakroom Refurbishment | Ilkley | More Kitchens
Published: 22 September 2025
Background
Having discovered More Kitchens in a magazine advertisement, Mr & Mrs Cooper visited our Harrogate Kitchen Showroom. Greeted by Senior Designer Simon Grant, they were immediately impressed by his knowledge and approachable manner. Excited by the possibilities and reassured by his professionalism, they quickly booked a free design appointment to explore their multi kitchen and cloakroom refurbishment in more detail.
The Coopers’ home featured an extension that linked their kitchen to a downstairs cloakroom. However, this space had become underutilised, acting more as a walkthrough than a practical part of the house. The existing kitchen was small, long, and narrow—out of proportion with the scale of the property. While the couple initially considered building a further extension, Simon identified a more efficient solution: reconfigure the underused space to create a larger, more functional kitchen that felt truly in keeping with the rest of the home.
Objective
The main goal was to transform the undersized kitchen into a bright, practical, and welcoming space, while also modernising the downstairs cloakroom. Rather than extending further, the design focused on making better use of existing square footage, creating an L-shaped kitchen that offered both generous proportions and smart storage solutions.

Kitchen Design
The chosen design was a timeless classic painted Shaker style in Pendle Bleached Stone, a soft, airy shade that brightened the space. This was complemented by a Sienna Oak LVT floor and a carefully selected worktop to strike the perfect balance of warmth and light.
Practicality was central to the design. A cloakroom unit by the door added useful storage, while a feature wall with shelving above the dining table provided display space and visual interest. The boiler was kept in place, but tall units were cleverly adapted to form a utility cupboard housing the washing machine, ensuring functionality without compromising on style.

The working layout was refined to support everyday use. The oven and hob appliances were positioned at the end of the room, while the ceramic sink beneath the side windows created a natural focal point. Together, these formed the perfect cooking triangle—efficient, ergonomic, and enjoyable to use.

The downstairs cloakroom was also updated to mirror the kitchen’s design, creating a seamless and unified look across the ground floor.

Kitchen Installation
The installation was a significant undertaking and showcased the benefit of working with a company that manages both the design and building works under one roof. Internal walls were removed to open up the walkthrough area, reconnecting the once-isolated extension to the main house. This required skilled building work, careful structural adjustments, and close coordination of trades to ensure everything was completed safely and to a high standard.

With the structural changes in place, the focus turned to fitting the kitchen itself. Rob, the Project Manager, remained hands-on from beginning to end, keeping the clients fully informed and ensuring the process felt smooth and controlled despite the scale of the works. His oversight gave Mr & Mrs Cooper confidence that every stage was being handled with care.
Andy, the Multi-Skilled Kitchen Fitter, then brought the design to life. His craftsmanship was evident in every detail—from adapting the tall cabinetry to fit around the boiler, to ensuring each finish was precise and polished. His commitment and professionalism reassured the couple that they could place their complete trust in him, even while their home underwent such extensive transformation.

Customer Journey
For Mr & Mrs Cooper, the experience was as important as the end result. At the showroom, they felt an immediate sense of excitement and trust thanks to Simon’s knowledge and design expertise. During the installation, they were reassured by Rob’s attentive oversight and Andy’s meticulous workmanship, which gave them peace of mind through what could otherwise have been a daunting process. And when the project was complete, they felt pride and joy at seeing their vision realised—a sense that their home finally “worked” for them in both style and function.
Project Outcome
The final result is a bright, spacious, and beautifully proportioned kitchen that now feels in harmony with the rest of the property. The clever L-shaped layout maximises both space and practicality, while the integrated cloakroom and utility storage ensure the room is as functional as it is stylish. Most importantly, the Coopers now have a home that suits their lifestyle and reflects their personal taste, without the need for further extension.
Customer Review
Mr & Mrs Cooper left a glowing 5* Trustpilot review:
“I am so happy with my kitchen. I wanted to update my kitchen and create more space for us all to sit round. Simon came in and gave me a design which just works so well for me. Rob was there too from start to finish providing support. I cannot praise Andy the fitter enough. He is totally committed to his work. I could trust him completely and I am just so happy with the finished result. I have no hesitation in recommending More Kitchens.”
