Traditional Kitchen Transformation | Knaresborough | More Kitchens
Published: 30 July 2025
Background
Longstanding customers of More Bathrooms, Mr & Mrs Gentle had previously completed two-bathroom renovations with us and returned when the time came to reimagine their kitchen. While initially focused on updating the kitchen, the project soon evolved into a comprehensive redesign of the downstairs layout to better suit the couple’s lifestyle and make the most of their space.
The existing kitchen layout had become a frustration. The central island—once practical—had become more of an obstruction, and the room overall needed a refresh. Inspired by their trust in our previous work and a desire to enhance the flow of their home, the couple entrusted More Kitchens with a full redesign that would transform not only their kitchen but their entire ground floor.
Objective
The primary goal was to create a more open and usable kitchen area while improving circulation across the downstairs. The original configuration included several doorways that disrupted wall space and limited the kitchen’s potential. With this in mind, our team reimagined the ground floor layout to support a more functional, flowing space for everyday living and entertaining.
By blocking off two internal doorways into the snug and dining rooms and knocking through another wall to form a hallway, we unlocked new opportunities for kitchen design. The downstairs cloakroom was also reconfigured, becoming smaller and relocated to fit seamlessly off the new hallway. These layout changes provided more usable wall space, reduced interruption from doors, and created the foundation for a well-zoned ground floor.

Kitchen Design
The new kitchen was designed around a peninsular layout—offering the benefits of a social island while giving the cook a defined and uninterrupted workspace. The hob was strategically relocated onto the peninsular, enabling the cook to face and interact with family or guests while preparing meals. This arrangement helped clearly separate the cooking zone from circulation areas, creating a functional, efficient, and sociable space.

With the structural changes in place, the entire ground floor was unified with over 85m² of newly laid flooring, helping visually connect the kitchen, new hallway, and downstairs cloakroom. The design struck a balance between traditional styling and modern practicality—perfect for a couple who valued character as well as comfort.
Kitchen Installation
As with all More Kitchens projects, the entire renovation was fully project-managed to ensure a seamless and stress-free experience. Senior Designer Andy worked closely with Mr and Mrs Gentle to shape the design, offering expert guidance and patiently refining details until the perfect layout was achieved.
Once on site, Project Manager Rob remained actively involved from start to finish, making sure everything progressed smoothly and offering practical solutions to any adjustments that arose during the build. The lead Multi-Skilled Kitchen Fitter, Stuart, delivered exceptional workmanship throughout. Known for his attention to detail, professionalism, and courtesy, Stuart maintained a clean and tidy workspace each day—ensuring minimal disruption to the clients' daily life while achieving a flawless finish.

Project Outcome
The end result is a thoughtfully reconfigured and beautifully styled kitchen and ground floor layout that perfectly suits the clients’ lifestyle. With better flow, more functional space, and a fresh new look, the transformation has dramatically improved both the practicality and feel of the home.
What began as a kitchen refurbishment grew into a comprehensive downstairs renovation—and thanks to expert planning, skilled execution, and trusted relationships, the outcome exceeded expectations.

Customer Review:
Mr & Mrs Gentle left the following 5* review on the More Kitchens Trustpilot page:
“We had used More Bathrooms for two previous projects and, because we had such an excellent experience, we went straight back to them when we were ready to upgrade our kitchen.
The experience from start to finish was excellent. Andy, the designer, was helpful, knowledgeable and patient as we finalised our design. Rob ensured that the final design would work in the space and pointed out and addressed any minor amendments needed. He stayed involved throughout to ensure the project progressed as planned. Stuart was our lead fitter and he is exceptional—extremely talented at everything he does with excellent attention to detail. He also leaves the house each night in the best possible state that he can. We had absolutely no concerns throughout the project. Stuart, along with every single other tradesman that came through the door, is friendly, polite, courteous and easy to have around your house.
We can honestly not fault anything or anyone and are delighted with our new kitchen, new ground floor configuration and new downstairs toilet. Thank you all, you deserve every success.”
